A good response. But I would say that being fragile and unable to handle stress and criticism may be fatal weaknesses. Idealism is a fine thing, and necessary for the very young. But the world has teeth and will not provide a trigger warning before it bites you. You can’t hide from it in some safe space.

Up until 3 years ago I taught mostly college freshmen. I was alternately appalled by their ignorance and stunned by their stupidity. I did my best to help them, but in the end, it was their helplessness, among many other factors, that made me leave teaching.

Now I routinely meet 30 year olds who show few signs of being adults. Maybe it’s OK to grow up slower than previous generations. I don’t know. The bigger question is, will they ever grow up at all.
