And yet endless generations of children grew up without constant surveillance. Only now are buzzing helicopter parents and vigilant do-gooders suddenly necessary. Is that about the needs of the children or the jobs of the self-righteous watchers? How can children learn to be free, when every move they make is scrutinized? When Big Brother referees every disagreement? Perhaps we need “certified” sitters in infants’ rooms to correct their parents' failings. Or is all this just a ploy to create more adults dependent on authority. Where does it end? Interesting questions, not asked by only grumpy old people.
