Dick and Jane, however currently un-PC, were a great way to learn to read. Clearly, whatever is being used now doesn’t work, as most Millennials have the reading comprehension of termites.

As for June Cleaver, no one ever made pearls and a vacuum cleaner sexier. And Ward was as kind as he was bland. The Cleavers were the family we all wanted, but never seemed to have.

None of it was ever real, but real is just a lie we tell ourselves about now, that we are somehow special, at least until later enlightens us, and we become smugly convinced of our superiority to the past.

Every generation has its myths, needs its myths to embrace or reject and become what it is, a process that is never finished.
