During my last year of teaching, one day into a new semester, I got called into the Principal’s (Dean’s) office. I had told a joke (not a very good one) to illustrate a point about making assumptions without considering as much data as possible. I was informed that my joke had “offended” one female student. I was told that it did not matter if the joke was offensive or if I had intended to offend. Nor was I allowed to know who had complained. I wasn’t even told how it had offended her. All that mattered was the she was offended.
Think through the legal ramifications of what I just described. Kafka lives!
That was my last year of teaching. Anyone who gets through four years of college without being offended has been robbed. Having your ideas challenged is a basic reason to go to college.
The inmates, with the help of a PC fifth column, had captured the asylum. I fled and have never gone or looked back. One of my few good life decisions. :)
