First, you must be able to read. There are many current college graduates for whom that skill is but a rumor.

Second, you must live in a culture that values reading. Ours does not. When was the last time you heard someone complimented for being “well read.” Not lately.

Having been a college professor until three years ago, I am not at all surprised at massive adult semi-literacy. Real literacy requires real, individual, thinking minds. What we currently have is the digital hive mind.

Don’t expect that to change soon. I doubt it ever will. Resistance is futile. :)
