I liked your story. Keep in mind that Joesph Conrad wasn’t a native English speaker. Nor was Joseph Brodsky.

You might try translating Spanish poetry into English or translating your favorite English poems into Spanish. Doing both might give you a closer feel for the language. It’s fun, too. Even I have translated some German poetry into English. It helped my German a good deal. :)
