I read a lot of history and I understand the fact (nearly unknown here) that it was the Soviets who defeated the Germans, not the US and the UK. Your Grandfather was a lucky man to survive the war in a T-34 tank

Unfortunately, Wilfred Owen’s “old lie” still lives, and as Pound said, soldiers still come home to “liars in public places.”

Americans, unlike Russians and Germans, tend to be blithe about war because it has never come to America. I’m glad it hasn’t, but that blitheness is a very dangerous thing.
