In Vietnam, I was never brave. I was always terrified. But I managed to do my job, mostly, I think, because others relied on me. It took me decades to accept that that was a kind of courage. Not hero courage, just human courage. In extreme circumstances, we find out who we are, what we are capable of. That doesn’t require going to war. I think, one way or another, it happens to most people at some point. Until it happens, you can’t know. Courage is only a word until it is tested. Thanks.
