In Vietnam, the strength of a division varied from about 12,000 to 18,000 soldiers, depending on what support units it incorporated. That was paper strength. By 1969 almost all divisions were woefully undersized in reality. Vietnam was fought mainly by brigades. It was rare for a full division to have all its brigades in the country at one time.
