Modern weaponry, including drones, smart bombs, better attack aircraft, GPS guided artillery, etc. makes battlefield survival for large, massed numbers of infantry almost impossible. Numbers don’t matter much. They can be engaged and destroyed without using boots on the ground. Those are only needed for mopping up and holding territory. And even holding territory is not of much importance anymore. The traditional infantryman is fading into history, overtaken by technology.
