Nobody ever talks about the biggest tax give away of all: the mortgage interest home deduction (69.7 billion in 2013). The poor can’t use it and the rich don’t need it. It exists to allow middle-class people to get mortgages they can’t afford and keep them on the treadmill to pay them off. It is an enabler for dependency. Period.
