One For The Road

I went to the crossroad, fell down on my knees
Asked the Lord above “Have mercy, now save poor Bob if you please.”

We toss off small decisions
that seem inconsequential,
but secretly shape our lives.

Pebbles become boulders
in the landslides of our being,
that become life itself.

Every one a turning point,
opening another box,
sealing another cat’s fate.

At every crossroad
we turn into who we are,
turn into who we will be.

Oedipus should have
paid more attention,
and like Robert Johnson,
made a better bargain.

At every crossroad
we make that deal with the devil
who lives in the details.

Be wary at every turn.
