“Poet Laureate of Medium,”… hmm. Poet Laureates are usually old guys (yes, usually guys) who long since done their most important work. I’d say the describes me. It is not unusual for poets to write less or not at all after a certain age, Donald Hall springs to mind.
I don’t think this is because of diminished intellect. I think it’s because as you age, you are often less engaged with the current world. I know I am. I’m a 20th Century guy stuck in a 21st Century world that I don’t much like or understand. When that happens, you begin to write from memories. That’s fine, but there is a limit to it, after which repetition sets in and your poems become variations on the same themes.
For the last five years I have written incessantly. Almost every day. I think I have a thousand poems just on Medium. That’s more than enough for anyone who wants to glimpse my poetry and my ideas. I don’t think I have much to add.
Recently I have more or less stopped writing. I have almost completely stopped reading (or even visiting) Medium. Medium is a great platform for people under 35 or so. Logically (nearing 67), I look to other sources of reading. As far as posting, except for perhaps the odd poem, I am no longer active on the platform.
So thank you for the compliment. I appreciate its spirit. And keep after that damned text editor. :)
