Things change so strangely,
catch us in errant surprise.

Something that was everything
suddenly becomes nothing.

Extinction always startles.

Things once common fade
into distant, obscure memory.

Like knights and armor.
Like bellowing blacksmiths.
Like stalking food to eat.
Like plowing with horses.
Like battles with swords.
Like the wet feel of flesh
before the latex of AIDS.
Like conversations, face to face.
Like letters dropped in boxes.

Harder and harder to recall
what was loved and lost.

Nothing to shed tears over.
The future wins at any cost.
