Recommending books is very iffy. I rarely do it. Most people are only casual readers, at best. Give them a fast paced bestseller, they may be OK. Suggest anything difficult, you are asking for trouble.
As to your list, I agree with most of what you say. My only argument would be to go back to A Clockwork Orange and try it again. The “made up words” are the core of the book, which is not a sci-fi thriller, but an examination of language itself, and how it affects people.
At least you read, which is an increasing rarity in all age groups, but has practically disappeared in those under 40.
Generally, it is a good thing to beware of other folk’s “must…” lists. The best books are there, waiting to be discovered, but they may not be for you.
