The invention of the typewriter fundamentally changed poetry by breaking the line, making the poem an image, and creating a Gestalt. White space is a kind of meaning, or at least a form of punctuation.
The fact that Medium won’t make this simple allowance in its text editor shows its contempt for poetry. Medium is about content, not creativity.
I am not posting on Medium this month. In the 14 months I have been on it, it has only changed for the worse. What was a (sort of) community is now just a glorified blog for creatives, whatever that fashionably absurd term might mean.
No doubt I’ll return and use it again, but I see it more as a free (or cheap) on-line storage space than a place to really engage an audience.
Sad.
Here’s hoping Ev Williams makes his billion. He can then (having given us the curse of Twitter) move on to his next attempt to dilute and destroy language and demean the imagination.
