That is true not only in the west. The influx of Spanish speakers here in south-central PA in the last 30 years has been profound. Most people, if they think of Lancaster (at all), think Amish. Actually, the city itself is mostly Hispanic. This is not a situation that makes indigenous white folk happy. I don’t know enough Hispanics to know if your account of their skills is correct. I do know they do a lot of the hard, dirty work. I was speaking of the white, urban and suburban masses that inhabit the two hundred mile area abutting the coasts, about 60% of the US population. Perhaps new blood brings new hope. Time will tell.
