The Greek Muses: Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, and Urania were all the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. First, you had to beg their help, as Homer did in the famous first line of The Illiad: Rage — Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus’ son Achilles,
murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses. Then, if you were lucky, they showed up and sang their song through you. If you weren’t, they didn’t. Either way, they called the shots.
So, they were both bossy and fickle. I will make no modern analogies. I like my head where it is. :)
