The New Medium? Probably No Poetry Or Fiction.

I just got an email inviting me (as a popular Medium writer) to complete a submission form for the new subscription model of Medium.

Great. I’m flattered.

It’s a great form and entirely appropriate if you write non-fiction articles. Pitch the subject, pick a deadline, estimate word count, ask an amount, etc.

Of course, for poetry and fiction. It simply doesn’t work at all. How would you do any of the above for a poem? It’s absurd to even think of.

I filled it out as best I could, mainly to show how irrelevant it is to what I do, but it feels like the beginning of a purge.

If this form really indicates Medium’s approach for the future, I’m pretty sure there will be no poetry. Probably no fiction either.

Apparently, in this brave new world, submissions will be pitched and made directly to Medium. If you edit a poetry/fiction publication, you might want to check with Medium on your continued existence.

I’ll publish here while I can, but I don’t see how I fit into the new… (wait for it)… paradigm.
