The short story has been dying since print magazines began their decline in the ’70s. They were the market, were numerous, they paid. Since then, SS has been the purview of “literary” magazines. They are the market, they have fewer readers and (mostly) they don’t pay. Doesn’t mean good stories aren’t out there, just that it takes more effort to find them.
