There is always a choice, but if you are conscripted, its harder. I was 19 when drafted, a kid from a small town. I came from a military family. My father was in Korea. My uncles fought in WWII. My ancestors were at Gettysburg and the Battle in the Clouds. That’s a lot of pressure on a 19 year old. At that age, Canada or prison just weren’t an option for me. When you grew up on stories of Normandy and Bastogne, it was harder to say no. Dratee or volunteer. orders are orders.
