Thief In The Night
for Will Shakespeare and Ez Pound
You thieve words and plunder lines,
making every taking obvious as possible.
What you’ve stolen is unimportant.
How you change and polish it matters.
You imagine many things, but see others
waiting to be plucked and pocketed.
You are taker and maker all at once.
You never seek perfection of any kind.
You leave dreams of originality to sleepers.
You refuse to regret like a wounded fish.
You keep close company and mask your face,
then hijack a wagon to another place,
doing your best to stay awake and see,
taking your pilferings to set them free.
