Thoreau was the truest American of his hour
who chose action and refused to cower,
behind the ramparts of conventionality
but moved a short distance and was free
to walk a few miles and still eat with mama
while boldly confronting the dismal drama
that his imperious, perilous times demanded
and does not deserve to be reprimanded
for enjoying a hot meal once in a while.
Mileage was was certainly not his style.
He stayed close to home, that is true,
but spoke truth to power and deserves his due.
